Preface
I wrote this book because South Sudan’s independence on 9 July 2011 cannot be understood apart from the history that preceded it. The referendum and the final liberation struggle came after generations of conquest, resistance, political exclusion, constitutional argument, armed conflict and engagement beyond Sudan’s borders. That longer record helps explain both the achievement of independence and the responsibilities that followed it.

لماذا كتبتُ مقدمة كتاب جنوب السودان: من التحرر إلى الدبلوماسية
كتبتُ هذا الكتاب انطلاقًا من قناعة بأن استقلال جنوب السودان في ٩ يوليو ٢٠١١ لا يمكن فهمه بمعزل عن المراحل التاريخية التي سبقته وشكّلت سياقه. فالاستفتاء والمرحلة الأخيرة من النضال التحرري لم يأتيا من فراغ، بل جاءا في أعقاب تاريخ امتد عبر أجيال، وتعاقبت خلاله تجارب الغزو والمقاومة والإقصاء السياسي والجدل الدستوري والصراع المسلح والعمل السياسي خارج حدود السودان. ويُعين تتبّع هذا المسار التاريخي الطويل على فهم الكيفية التي تحقق بها الاستقلال، كما يكشف جسامة المسؤوليات التي ترتبت عليه.
